Gato Negro, AKA Black Cat AKA Emmanuel Okoronta, is a dubster from Nigeria who sounds something like a cross between Lee Scratch Perry and Augustus Pablo -- the former because of his semi-crazed, rambling vocals though still more coherent than Perry and the latter because of his frequent use of the airy melodica. At times, this combination of sounds rivals the genius of Gato Negro`s predecessors -- as on Armageddon, Conflagration, and Reggae for Lumumba -- but this quality is inconsistent. Aside from those 3 tunes, there is little magical on Black Cat Dub, although the overall sound is nice; big fans of dub -- especially the old-fashioned, rootsy, `70s style -- should find it appealing nonetheless.
